Throughout my MSN program, it has been a journey of discovery. I have learned a great deal about myself as well as enhanced my personal perspective on how leadership promotes organizational health. The purpose of this paper is to describe my professional aspirations and learning gained from this program to enhance my performance and my career including the steps I will take to achieve the objectives established during my practicum experience.
Over the past ten years, I have grown as a leader. I started as a new graduate nurse and went back to school while working full time with young children. I completed my BSN program with Walden and continued to work as many hours as possible to provide for my family. I have recognized that a bridge program to go from associates to MSN would have been best to accelerate my growth, however, I also believe things happen for a reason and I am now motivated more than ever to succeed.
Practicum Used to Promote Change
This MSN program has taught me to be a more effective leader in many ways. It has helped me understand the concepts of organizational development and understanding of fundamental needs for organization success. By utilizing evidence-based support for practice change implementations you use proven methods that help ensure successful outcome optimization. It has also helped me identify barriers to organizational health as well as leadership performance deficits. Those deficits are part of the motivation I have to bring a lead by example approach supported by current evidence-based practice to not only help the organizations I work with but to also begin to build a reputation as an effective executive nurse leader. “Leadership practice can no longer involve just one person, by necessity, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to imagine how things could have been accomplished otherwise” Chitpin (2019). It has become increasingly recognized the new talent with innovative ideas are necessary to help health care adapt to remain effective. As times change adaptation in the intervention must also evolve. System-level thinking guides my strategy as I take the knowledge I have gained and continue to build on it. I hope to take these new skills and apply them to my practicum for this course to help me develop and implement real-world solutions directly influenced by my guidance.
Objective to Facilitate Professional Growth
In this final capstone/ practicum course I will use the objective of obtaining an administrative role that will not only help promote my career by removing my current duties of performing bedside direct patient care mixed with administrative responsibilities but will allow me to take the knowledge I have gained and apply it to improve patient outcomes on a facility level. My skill set has been suppressed to do my capability. As a male in nursing, I have been utilized as a strong leader that is willing to help everyone. Because of this reliability, my unit has not wanted me to leave and have made efforts to prevent my professional growth. “The nursing leadership role has evolved over the years into a demanding position that requires not only multifaceted nursing and business skills, but also a significant amount of energy, resiliency, and personal dedication” Kiper (2019). This motivated me to go back to school and further my educational development to ensure that those in management immediately above me can no longer suppress my growth. By advancing into a position that allows my strategic influence with evidence-based principles I have no doubt that great things are going to happen in the near future. “The world has seen the pace of health care innovation accelerate at a tremendous rate, with the typical timeline of years becoming weeks or days. Solutions to help cope with COVID-19 have been produced at an extraordinary pace” Palanica & Fossat (2020). The forced implementation change needs have created an opportunity for healthcare leadership to reallocate resources to improve strategy implementation success to deal with public healthcare needs. As a nurse executive, this allows increased room for growth and the ability to show my value in an increased capacity within my current organization. That experience will help me build my portfolio of successful and sustainable projects created with my participation.
My professional aspirations include obtaining a new position with a more self gratifying role in the healthcare industry. It has bothered me severely to work in my current capacity with having my ideas taken and used to promote others including credit rarely given for my work. This will be changing soon and the results of the learning from this program will help create the opportunity to live up to my potential. “Learners who are actively engaged in the training or learning process are more likely to achieve success in the task at hand” Shreve, Fardell, See & Slonim (2020). My objective is career advancement and the results of that advancement will lead to greater workplace efficiency, cost savings, and optimized outcomes.
