Here are the instructions for your researched argument essay.

Make a claim about an issue around which there are diverse opinions. Ask yourself if your issue is debatable. Avoid making an obvious claim. Example: “People have various stances on the issue of abortion.” That’s an obvious point about which there is no debate. Instead, make a specific claim about the issue.

Example: “Issue X could improve if people were educated to do Y.”

This sentence is a policy argument. You are trying to argue that people should take action on an issue or correct it in some way.

Example: “I propose that Issue X be viewed differently than it has been presented in the past. To be informed, people need to know A, B, and C about issue X. “

The purpose of this argument is to give your reader more information about an issue with the idea that they may change their positions and be moved to take action. Your purpose here is to educate your reader so that they are no longer neutral about your issue.

Example: X is a poor policy because of a, b, and c. Because Stance X is not an appropriate response to this issue, people should be educated about the benefits of Stance Y which contributes to society in a, b, and c, ways.

This claim sets your argument up as a contrast and comparison argument. Here, you are supposed to define at least two sides on an issue. Then, you detail the good and bad things about both sides. Your purpose is to convince your reader that one side is better or worse than another side. You will need to devote time to showing the effects of each stance on an issue.

Things to Remember:

A good argumentative paper has a clear thesis generated by a compelling question to which the writer wants to respond

Example: How does having a Christian worldview impact a student’s life and studies in college? How does not having a Christian worldview impact a student’s studies in college? Answering these questions means that you will be writing about the effects of holding different worldviews.

2. Remember that the first sentence of every paragraph is your promise to your reader about the contents of that paragraph. Example: “Students who hold a Christian worldview study under the conviction that all truth is God’s truth.” Every detail in this paragraph should explain and illustrate this claim to your reader. Remember the “writing success sandwich:” 1. Make a claim. 2. Support it with textual or scholarly evidence. 3. Explain your claim again in the light of this evidence. Explain the significance of your evidence as it relates to your claim.

Give your paper a descriptive title. Don’t write, “Research Paper.” Give your reader an idea about your thesis in your title. Example: “Jumping out of a Fishbowl into an Ocean: The Impact of a Christian Worldview in College.” That title tells your reader about your main idea in the paper.

Double-space the whole paper.

The paper is 5 to 7 pages long. This page length requirement does not include your Works Cited page.

The paper should include at least 3 secondary scholarly sources.

Your Works Cited should be at the end of your paper. All sources should be documented in MLA format. Please consult your textbook and the MLA manual in Course Materials for MLA formatting guidelines.
