This course equips students with the knowledge and skills to think about key economic, political, and social issues related to globalization, and to make coherent and evidence-based arguments. The course highlights major analytical frameworks in the field of international political economy and how these can be applied to empirical questions concerning the structure of the global economy; the sources and implications of globalization; the nature of international economic institutions; and national economic policy choices. This course focuses on urgent problems and enduring questions, including: how can we explain the recent rise of populism—and is there a backlash against globalization? How does international trade affect prosperity and inequality in developed and developing economies? Should capital be able to flow freely across borders? What is the right balance between national sovereignty and international integration? How does the rise of China change the world system, and how should the US-China economic relationship be managed? What will the role of the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and Belt and Road initiative be in the international system? What is the best solution to tackle climate change at a global level? Who are the winners and losers of the global energy transition? And how should policy makers respond to technological developments in advanced and emerging economies? Each day, we meet people with whom we need to interact. A bus driver or a mail carrier; a teacher or a boss; a potential significant other or a new relative. In many cases, the most important part of these interactions is our first impressions, the characteristics and tendencies we attribute to people we have just met. In this course, we study the psychology of attribution—the methods our brain uses to understand others, and how others use their brains to understand us. In the first half of the course, we review the mechanisms and limitations of our attribution system. In the second half, we examine what goes wrong when we misattribute, assuming things about people that are not true.
