Alexander Hamilton

Hello,
My essay is on Alexander Hamilton and why he helped primarily develop America into what it is today. The South regarded him as aristocratic and found his practices to unfavorable to the South. I’d like my essay to focus on how his actions were to unite America for the greater benefit, during his tenure as Secretary of the Treasury. Alexander Hamilton spoke out against slavery and wanted to focus on manufacturing, as he believed it was progressive. Little did he know, the cotton gin would strengthen the slave trade, but his intentions were good.

The reference needs to be from scholarly sources. Other references are fine, but at least 3 need to be scholarly.

Topic Selection and Academic Sources
Topic Idea → Background Research → Research Question → In-depth Research → Thesis Statement
After you have selected a topic that interests you, you want to consider the following questions.
-Is the topic manageable?
-Is there adequate source material?
-Is the topic credible?
Background research will help you narrow your focus to something manageable and historically specific.
Consider the following as you complete your background research and prepare your research question:
1. Ask how or why an event happened
2. Ask what the consequences were of an event (but remember to be historically specific)
3. Discuss the intellectual origins of a particular idea
4. Ask what the cultural context of an event was
5. Ask whether or not an individual was responsible for an act
6. Ask about the social history of a political event
During all of your research, you should be using sources that are credible. Keep careful track of the sources you find in a notebook, in a Word or Google Doc, or by using RefWorks. Writing down your sources will help you avoid plagiarism.
To narrow your sources to educational websites, use site:edu after your search terms.

After completing an ample background research, you will want to develop a research question. Your research question will guide your in-depth research, narrowing your focus further. Strong research questions should not be simple yes/no questions, and they should use the 5Ws to narrow the scope: who, what, when, where, and why. Your thesis statement will then be the answer to your research question.
Test the strength of your research question with the following questions:
1. Does my question allow for many possible answers? Is it flexible and open-ended?
2. Is it testable? Do I know what kind of evidence would allow an answer?
3. Can I break big “why” questions into empirically resolvable pieces?
4. Is the question clear and precise? Do I use vocabulary that is vague or needs a definition?
5. Have I made the premises explicit?
6. Is it of a scale suitable to the length of the assignment?
7. Can I explain why the answer matters?
Continue in-depth research to find a credible response to your research question. Rely on academic or scholarly, peer-edited sources during this stage. Continue to keep track of your sources so you avoid accidental plagiarism. After you have done plenty of research, work on formulating a thesis statement that answers your research question.
A thesis statement is the main argument you will present in your essay. Remember that thesis statements are not statements of purpose. Your thesis statement will be the answer to your research question. As you work on your thesis statement, which can be more than one sentence, remember the following details.
A thesis statement is:
NOT a fact
NOT an opinion
NOT a question
NOT a definition
NOT too vague
NOT too narrow
NOT a generalization
A thesis statement for a history essay:
MAKES a historical argument
TAKES a position that requires defending
IS historically specific
IS focused and precise
ANSWERS the question “so what?”

Also:
Your essay should focus mainly on content: developing and supporting your thesis in an organized fashion. Each paragraph should have a separate focus that works to support your thesis statement. You can work on sentence structure and grammar as you revise your essays before the final draft is due. focus mainly on content: developing and supporting your thesis in an organized fashion.
