PSYC 210 Researched Argument Paper

For this final paper, you will pick a specific point of view or argument you want to make and support from the list of topics below. Should you want to choose another, you will need to have it approved by your instructor. You need a strong claim and then write your paper defending that claim.

Type of Paper: Formulate your claim and begin drafting your paper. In researched argument papers, it is important that your claim (your argument) is clear; therefore, spend some time working on your thesis statement. Then you must decide how you will support the claim that you are making. List your reasons for your claim. You also need to consider the opposing sides of your claim. On what grounds would these disagree or oppose your claim? In an argument paper, you need to bring up these opposing points and explain why they do not make sense or acknowledge that they do make sense, and explain why the reader (audience) should dismiss them. An outline might help you organize the content of your paper. Again, be sure that you give your reasons for your claims and your reasons against them.

Audience: Think about the audience. Your purpose for writing this paper is to change the way people think about your issue or maybe even convince them to take some sort of action. Focusing on a very specific audience is usually the best way to create some sort of change. Who is most affected by your topic? Who could actually do something about it? How will you persuade them to see things from your point of view?

Resources: Now, since your claims in the paper will be highly opinionated, this is where the research or resources come in. Research strengthens your claims. You need supportive evidence from sound academic resources, sources in which you can obtain statistical information, and resources from professional sources. Resources like blogs, Wikipedia, social media are not sound academic resources that should be used for this paper.

Where to find resources: Use the Ivy Tech digital library that is linked to the College Resources module.

In each module on the Learning Activities pages, there are links to chapter web links full of specific resources that include programs, agencies, organizations, and government sites.

Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) is linked in the Course Resources page for assistance with APA formatting, in-text citations, listings on the references page, construction of the title page.
