To Get Started:
Read the play again, paying close attention to the characters. How would you describe them according to our characterization vocabulary (protagonist/antagonist, flat/round, dynamic/static)? What are the primary motivations of the characters? How do they relate to one another?
Identify the major plot points and how they fall on the basic formula. Explain your reasoning for your choice of rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.
Describe the setting. Where and when does the play take place? Identify clues as to the culture and mood of the play.
Identify the primary symbols of the play. What do those symbols mean? What is the writer trying to convey?
List the major themes and purpose(s) of the play. Why did the writer write this play in this way? What was s/he trying to say? What effect do you think the writer wanted the play to have?
Using the video in which I explain how to use the specific database for literature, find three relevant sources for your analysis. Both plays have sources written on them, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding sources for the specific play you want to write about.
Decide how the information in those sources helps you understand more about the play, and write out the quotes you will use in your essay.
Identify a major question you have about the play or a central problem you noticed. Create an outline that guides your reader through your own thought process about this play. Do not answer the questions above in order.
You are writing to a well-educated audience who has read the story you have. You should explain your analysis to this audience using accessible, but polished language.
Decide how to organize your analysis, and make a note of which quotes and examples from the story you will need to use.
Draft an essay that is:
1000 – 1500 words
Uses 3 sources
Supports every claim with an example from the story
Organized logically and clearly
In-text citations and Works Cited
